Broadcom has agreed to provide up to $42 billion in financing to Anthropic to help fund the AI company’s massive expansion of computing infrastructure, deepening a relationship that puts Broadcom at the center of Anthropic’s custom AI accelerator strategy.
The financing is tied to Anthropic’s agreement to lease $125.2 billion worth of tensor processing unit (TPU) computing capacity over five years, meaning Broadcom’s potential financing could cover roughly one-third of the commitment. The arrangement was disclosed in the prospectus for Anthropic’s initial public offering.
Broadcom is carving a niche as a provider of custom AI accelerators. Rather than simply selling chips, Broadcom designs custom accelerators for major technology companies and supplies the networking and other semiconductor components needed to connect large AI systems.
Broadcom’s biggest custom silicon customer is Google. The two companies jointly develop Google’s Tensor Processing Unit (TPU). And Anthropic announced in April that it had expanded its partnership with Google and Broadcom to secure multiple gigawatts of next-generation TPU capacity beginning in 2027.
Under the agreement, Anthropic would issue a convertible note, potentially allowing Broadcom or a financing partner it designates to convert the debt into Anthropic equity. Anthropic said it does not expect the notes to be sold before completing its IPO.
The arrangement also includes financial protections for Broadcom. Anthropic disclosed that it deposited cash into a restricted account for Broadcom’s benefit in April and could be required to contribute additional funds under certain circumstances. Certain payment or performance defaults could make a substantial portion of Anthropic’s lease obligations immediately due.
And with this deal, Broadcom emerges as a valid threat to NVIDIA’s hegemony. There are plenty of startups and established players alike looking to take business from NVIDIA, and Google is one of them. Google’s TPU is one of the most prominent competitors and alternatives to NVIDIA and now it is expanding beyond Google’s borders to Anthropic.
If Anthropic’s TPU deployment proceeds as planned, it would represent a substantial block of AI compute operating outside of NVIDIA’s GPU ecosystem.
Broadcom’s financing strategy resembles NVIDIA’s increasingly active role in funding AI infrastructure. In recent months, NVIDIA has invested billions of dollars in Intel, CoreWeave, OpenAI and Anthropic itself.
